struggling to get backlinks

4 Reasons Why You’re Struggling To Get Backlinks

We all want more traffic to our blog so we appreciate that we need to get back links to boost our search engine rankings. After all it's no secret that one of the biggest ingredients for getting ranked highly in Google is your ability to get quality backlinks – the greater the number of links and the higher the authority of site that those links come from the more targeted traffic you're likely to receive from Google and the other search engines.

As a result the concept of “link building” has become big business with numerous tools, courses and specialist providers helping to get backlinks. But make no mistake – it can be boring, slow and frustrating to get backlinks for your blog – especially if you're looking for the very best authority links to beat your competition.

Reframing The “How Do I Get Backlinks?” Question

struggling to get backlinksLet's be honest here – there aren't many altruistic website owners out there willing to link to you “just because”. A key element for success if you want to get backlinks to your blog is understanding that in many ways links are “transactional”; that is to say that when someone links to your website they're generally expecting to get something back in return.

Now that “something” may be a direct benefit for linking to you, such as payment in the form of paid links. Or it could be something less direct such as linking to your site because it makes them look good when they pass it along to their readers.

But be aware that whatever the “currency” is going to be, if you want to get backlinks then you need to appreciate the transactional nature of links. In light of this we need to reframe the primary link building question from “how do I get backlinks?” to “what do I have to offer other website owners in exchange for a link?”.

Now let's take a closer look at some of the most common reasons that bloggers struggle to get backlinks from other sites…

Don't Get Backlinks From Poor Neighborhoods

Google has publicly stated that one aspect of their ranking algorithm is looking at the over “link neighborhood” of a website. If you get backlinks from low quality sources – mass-produced forum profiles, blog comment spam and suchlike – the more than likely you're going to struggle to rank highly.

Just as worryingly authority site owners are going to be far less likely to link to you simply because they don't want to be associated with such a neighborhood. After all your link neighborhood doesn't just cover the sites that you get backlinks from – but also just as importantly the sites that you yourself link out to.

So if you want to get backlinks that really make a difference to your position in the search engines then pay attention to your link profile and try to avoid junk links that may cause Google to view you less favorably than your competitors.

Amateur Design

The owners of authority sites have spent years working to produce top-quality content and then intelligently get backlinks. Authority websites don't just happen – they require a lot of time and effort to create and understandably these website owners want to protect their “brand”.

Whilst it's not always a deal-breaker if your website design screams “amateur” you're going to struggle to get backlinks because the professionalism of the originating site may be called into question.

Your website design needs to reflect professionalism and trust the moment anyone arrives. That means a clean, crisp theme. That means minimal flashing banners and popups. That means no broken links and so on. It needs to be a site you'd be proud to show your family and friends. If not, make the necessary changes before you go out trying to get backlinks.

Lack Of Truly Unique Content

What makes your site better than linking to any other? These days you can get an average-quality article written by a freelance writer for a few dollars so it's easy-enough to fill a website with content in a very short space of time. But these low-quality articles often simply regurgitate content available elsewhere on the internet, offering no real additional value over your competitors and consequently making it hard to get backlinks.

Thinking about the situation from the perspective of your link prospects clearly they want to offer their hard-won visitors something truly unique and original – something notable that stands out from the sea of “me too” sites out there.

As a result try to avoid writing yet another article on “how to get more Twitter followers” or “why you should start a blog” and instead try to find unique, original and interesting angles to your chosen topic to make it easier to get backlinks naturally. One smart way to do this is to present information in the form of personal experiences – show us what you did and the results and/or interview other people in your niche for additional unique viewpoints that haven't been explored elsewhere. In doing so it'll be far easier to get backlinks because you'll be offering something new and unique that others will want to read.

A Focus On Monetization Not Valuable Content

There's nothing worse than arriving at an overly-monetized site. These are sites with more adverts than content, where all the article titles focus specifically on carefully-chosen “money” keywords, where flashing banners, popups and Adsense adverts are so prevalent that you're unable to enjoy the actual content itself. Unsurprisingly as a result they struggle to get backlinks from high quality sources that will really help them build their traffic levels.

Other websites want to link to sites that add value to their visitor's experience. Oh sure, we all want results from our websites but try to find the happy medium between user-experience and monetization.

Is it slow and boring to get backlinks? It certainly can be but if you're trying to build links to a website that deserves links and that other sites will want to link to then your link-building will be a lot easier – and you'll get backlinks with far less effort than if you were doing outreach for a junk site. The key lesson is this – work on your website until you genuinely believe it is the sort of site that other people will want to link to – and then go out and get backlinks afterward.

So now it's your turn – leave us a comment below and let us know what makes you unlikely to link to a website that may request a link from you…

  1. I guess the most evident reason why most bloggers are unable to get backlinks is that they work hard at building backlinks. They hope that somehow someone will link to their posts, but unfortunately that’s not how things pan out. Nice points by the way.

    1. @Harshit,

I think the “secret” really combines a top quality site with intelligent marketing across a range of avenues. The more visibility your site has the more likely it is to attract links naturally.

  2. Hi Richard, You are right, authority sites took a lot of time creating backlinks and generating quality content on a consistent basis. Backlinks are truly the backbone of a website. Thanks for this article.

  3. All points you mention are good valid points. Good content meant for the end user combined with ethical SEO is the ultimate combination. I am not a believer of forum links or using bots for automatic link creation. These methods are long dead. What matters is carefully constructed blog posts with appropriate keywords combined with value added information and human social media engagement.

    1. @Shalu – you mentioned one of my favorite words – “value”. Provide enough value to the online community and links will become *far* easier to come by.

  4. Backlinks from a bad neighborhood is probably the same a living in a bad neighborhood: You could get mugged or robbed:-) Still, even if you have a good site with lots of unique content it could be hard to get good backlinks. One way of getting quality backlinks fast is from Youtube (make a youtube move and add your link in the description). Google seems to index these links very fast. Another quick way is answer pages like yahoo and quora.

    1. Rick – you’re right but then you need to be quite careful with Yahoo Answers as they seem to love closing accounts if they think they’re being used for link building – even if the answers you’re giving are truly valuable. Regarding YouTube – you’re right this can be a very hady way of getting links to your site. Of course you can also get some decent click-through traffic from YouTube as well as the link itself for SEO purposes.

      1. Yeah you are absolutely right! Once they closed my account! They didn’t actually closed it but stopped me from answering anymore. Btw I wasn’t spamming, I was on Level 4 and had lot of best answers, still they did that. 🙁

  5. hi Richard
    nice post
you have stated some important points in this article, blogging for money, lack of original articles, building backlinks from bad neighborhood are some of the worst mistakes a blogger can do.
    Thanks for sharing this article
    Bryan

  6. Hi Richard,

Bring value to the table. Receive backlinks. The formula works like a charm. Struggling bloggers simply don’t bring value in the form of helpful content, or they link up to back neighborhoods/blogs, or they impatiently hurry through relationship building. Power tips here.

Write top shelf content. Post with a purpose. Link to relevant, authority blogs. Get backlink juice. Change your self image. See yourself as a success, network with successes and it becomes much easier to generate authority backlinks.

    Thanks Richard!

    Ryan

    1. Hey Ryan,
No matter what I am always looking up to your comments. Just love the way how you express everything in just a few words. Awesome and inspirational words by you.

Using internet marketing to generate back links can greatly influence your own ranking in the various search engines. When post and comment in forums associated with your market after which it link it back aimed at your site, the search machines rate that one way link much higher compared to a link on a unrelated website.

  9. The backlinks are essential for any site, but we have to keep away from low quality links, as they would do more harm than good. The only way to build valuable backlinks is to bring useful and unique content, as others would do the rest for us.

    1. Very true Julian – I think these days the “wrong” kind of links can do more harm than good now that Google has admitted that negative SEO is a reality.

  10. Hi Richard,
I agree with the point where you said try to come up with unique, original and interesting angles on chosen topic instead of writing same low quality content available elsewhere on the internet, but I think the old and pro Bloggers already covered all those angles on thier blog which most new Bloggers are writing on thier blogs now.
Nice post anyway, thanks for sharing.

    Ehsan U.

    1. Ehsan – thanks for your comment though I’m not totally sure I agree with you that there are no new angles. We all have personal experiences we can talk about that are unique to us. Even if two different people have used the same technique, or piece of software, or training program etc. it’s likely their results and experiences will differ somewhat and these experiences can be very valuable indeed. Thanks for sharing your opinions with us though – differing viewpoints are more than welcome.

  11. One valuable point from each one of the topics. I agree with the key point of the article.
Great post. Thanks for the share.

  12. Richard,

Fantastic article… I think you nailed just about every main concept. I wanted to add something but really there isn’t much to add other “Ditto” and great work.

    Thanks!

    Ryan H.

  13. Hi Richard,

Sanjib here. You have highlighted valid points here. Mediocre content can never attract traffic nor can links be built. Readers will never would like to come back to blogs which compromise on content itself. Then, no question of getting back links.

    Thanks for this helpful post,

    Sanjib

    1. Sanjib – I think it *is* possible to build links to “average” content but it’s a lot easier and cheaper when you create *amazing* content that people really do want to link to on their own rather than having to be “pushed” 🙂

  14. Great article, I think you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned the lack of unique quality content. You have to give your viewers a reason to come to your site and more importantly a reason to come back, good quality content a sure fire to have people linking to your page in no time and should be viewed that way.

  15. Backlinks is a part of improvement in Search Engine ranking. Lots of bloggers involve in forum posting to get backlinks. I think unique & fresh content is the main way to get success in backlinks. Thanks for sharing such valuable content

  16. Richard- excellent blog. I do not think that getting backlinks are boring. It is tedious and time consuming, but if you find a strategy that works for you, the results will outweigh the negatives.

  17. Most of the people just try to drop link at any place they found and can harm the reputation of their site. It is really important to approach it in a systematic manner and Place your links in your own niche rather than all over the web…You summed it well..it’s a slow and boring task..

  18. Great post, yes I see your point with creating truly unique content and not regurgitated content. The more quality content, the more authoritative your blog is the more likely others will want to link back I guess.

  19. The mere act of requesting a link is unlikely to result in me actually wanting to link to a website. You correctly point out that quality content and well structured web design are key. I will find content and link to it on my own if it provides insight and is well designed. Linking to a page from an individual that writes an insightfull comment or a guest post is one area I find content of value. Ironically, sometimes the best way to focus on SEO is simply not to place to more emphasis on it than warranted. A link exchange request screams desperation, who wants to link to a company that does not merit a reference without an individual specially asking?

    1. Brent – you’re right. I spend quite a bit of time each day on Twitter and Facebook sharing *great* content – almost without exception these bloggers haven’t *asked* for a link – I just like what they’ve done and genuinely think it offers value. So I agree that putting an emphasis on great content is time well spent!

  20. Anton Koekemoer

    Hi Richard,

I do agree with you – Its now harder for a starting blogger to get backlinks from good ranking sites – due to the facts they don’t want to link back to bad neighbourhood sites. This makes playing the game that much harder – and takes a lot more effort to achieve the quality and authoritative page rank that you want to. SEO has changed dramatically over the past couple of months.

    1. Anton – I think you’re right – SEO has changed a lot over the last few months but there are also a number of “constants” that have remained unchanged for years.

In a way it’s funny – there are always new toos coming out to make getting backlinks easier – just think of all the automated software for building profile links, for directory submissions etc. and yet many of those are actually low quality links that often don’t help much with search engine rankings – especially in competitive niches.

So while getting “any old link” is easier than ever, getting *quality* links from top quality sites is really just as tough as ever – if not harder because there are so many more sites now competing for each keyword. More than ever we need to “up our game” if we’re serious about building a lasting online business.

  21. Hi,

It is really a struggling factor to get back links. Most of the time this happens when content is compromised on quality and relevance. Always readers prefer reading fresh topics with latest additions. Also, building a rapport is equally important. All these won’t happen all of a sudden. build relations and then build links.

    Amit from Itech.

  22. Hi Richard…
Thans for highlighting the main reason why people don’t get backlink easily…..

What i think if you don’t have proper plan schedule for everything ( or at least important things) then you will endup in these kind of situation…..

If you plan that you will target at least 10 backlink in a month then you will start thinking of it ways and then you execute it……but if don’t plan it and schedule it then you will always remain in same situation…..

  23. Now I know the reasons. I think I’m going to change my ways in where I should focus on building my backlinks. thank you so much for sharing such informative post.

  24. Hi Richards,
Totally in the corner on that you.
Authority sites take lots of time. The back links are the backbone of websites.
I think unique & fresh content is the main way to get success to increase website ranking.
Thanks for your gesture and good luck with your giveaway.

    1. You’re right Bhushan – true authority sites take a lot of time to build but they can be *so* worth it. Over the years I’ve built hundreds of sites and have had a fair few become true authorities in their niche.

To give you an example – I had a fitness site some years ago (since sold) and thanks to the authority it gained I found that every article I posted to it ended up on page one of Google like magic!

Aim for quality and focus on the long-term – it’s a lot easier than creating low quality sites that are at risk of being nuked by Google with each algorithm update.

      1. Thanks for stopping by sharing.
Found the social media articles very useful, something that I need to work on to increase my traffic. just never seem to have the amount of time it requires. Thanks for the useful info.

  25. When you have link in a poor neighbourhood is nothing but a waste of time. Sometimes also by linking especially for spammy site, you may end up hurting your site also.

  26. i must say that you observed all the small small aspects for creating backlinks , i agree with you that getting low quality backlinks is of of no use ,,,,,. keep sharing such good stuff 🙂

    1. I have learned this the hard way! There are so many people telling you to just submit your site to the social bookmarking sites or send out loads of spam blog comments etc. to build backlinks. But these are generally poor quality and don’t have much of an effect on your search engine rankings. Equally, I have found handful of links from good quality sites can make quite a noticeable difference – so that’s where I try and focus my time these days.

  27. you are right, the best way to get back links is to make them natural
i mean to write content that acts as a link magnet
thank you for the wonderful insights

  28. Richard, I never thought about design in the failure to get backlinks. I knew it drove people away, but I never considered the impact on a deeper level. Thanks for my lesson for today.

    1. Hi Marcie….
      Design affects in many ways…

A heavy and bulky design make your blog slow in loading….that compell people to leave your blog…

A Bad design irritate people and they leave your blog…

And if people don’t liking your blog then who will like to link with you…..
So blog design matters a lot

    2. Marcie – I agree with Sandeep (again!). It can be very difficult to “trust” a site if it’s covered in adverts or looks like it was thown up in half an hour like one of the “Made For Adsense (MFA)”-type sites.

A nice design that loads fast can do a lot to help establish authority. Infact, I have an authority site in a niche mainly filled with hobbyists. Because my site has a professional-looking theme it helps it to “stand out from the crowd” when everyone else has just used a basic Blogger blog with a standard theme and really helps my site to get noticed and attract links naturally.

  29. Great post Richard, main struggle comes because many people don’t have quality content. That’s really one of the main factors, good content will attract backlinks better than some kind of seo software.
    thanks for sharing

  30. Hi Richard….
You have mentioned very valid reason for not getting backlinks…..
I would like to add one more reason

lack of communication or interaction….most of the blogger write a post, publish it, share it on social networking sites and then just sit down…

They don’t want to interact with other fellow blogger….. they don’t want to put comments on others blog….

interaction with other bloggers give a chance to others know about you and your blog….through this interaction few of blogger can give a chance to write guest post for their blog and in return you can get couple of back link……
So Interaction is also help you in getting links and promotion

    1. Sandeep – your input is very welcome! And I have to say that I agree with you. Interacting with others on social media and forums – much like Ileane does – is a great way to build authority and lasting relationships. I don’t know *how* Ileane manages it all but she seems to be *everywhere* – commenting on blogs, sharing videos, giving +1’s on Google, responding to tweets. I don’t think she ever sleeps – but I get it’s been *amazing* for raising the profile of Basic Blog Tips and building links naturally. Ileane – any chance of an article on the tools and strategies you use to “be everywhere”?!

  31. Very well said Puneet….
Links matter every where whether its Personal, Professional or a blog…
Everybody want Link to get success in that field….

  32. “Amateur Design” is a very big problem. People these days have educated their tastes and can spot a professional design right away. Now that it’s not difficult to get a quality template or with a limited budget to get a quality custom design, there is no excuse for any website to look amateur or outdated.

  33. It’s definitely vital to create quality content for the opportunity to get more backlinks AND the fact that it’s your site. Your site represents you in one way or another, so make each post your best!

    Thanks a bunch,
    -Gabe

    1. Very true Gabe. I like to try and apply a simple philosophy when building a website: how would I feel showing it to my family/friends? If it’s of a “questionable nature”, is low quality, covered in popups or offers no real value then clearly I’d be far too embarrassed – so I don’t create sites like that. I want to create a site where my friends would go “Wow! This is great! How did you do this?!”. That’s consequently the response I hope to get from other website owners when they visit my site which makes getting links a *lot* easier 🙂

  34. I must admit this has given me food for thought. I have certainly been guilty of some of the points made here. Now I must return, have a bit of a rethink and a revamp too.

  35. When I started out as a freelancer, my client just told me to rewrite articles. Suffice to say it didn’t last long. Not only did I hate it, but his website content didn’t offer anything unique, and it was a mistake we’d both learn the hard way. Now, my content is sprinkled with personal experiences. It’s nice to see this article approves the method. Thanks!

  36. Wise post 🙂
With penguin update it seems that google prefers quality to quantity now.
I accept human comments on my blog when the comment proves that my post was read
but I don’t accept comments that are not linked at all with the post subject

  37. Awesome points here Richard. Often bloggers keep wondering what they did wrong and why other bloggers won’t back link to them. This post is going to give them answers and smart bloggers will make the necessary changes highlighted here like avoiding links to low quality neighborhoods and (over monetization + under optimzation of content) of their sites.

    1. Dr Shaikh you’re very correct. I receive emails daily from some of my authority sites from people requesting links and when you take a look at those sites there’s *no* way that you’d link to many of them. They just offer no value and are clearly just set up to earn money from Adsense/Clickbank etc.

As a side note, I think I should have added one more point to the list which is “on topic”. If I get one more link request for a gambling site I think I’ll scream 😉

  38. Providing the best content and professionally looking website is surely the best way to earn real followers, not just spammers. some bloggers chose money over quality, needless to say, they got the money but I’m not too sure if it will work for in a long term basis.

  39. I guess, post Panda, getting good and diversified backlinks is not at all easy. Any form of link building – including commenting, forum footers, commentluv etc are going to have predictable/repeated anchor text and Google will crack such sites down anyhow.

One of my sites got trashed by Google a month ago due to a poor link package that I purchased from a forum.

My idea on this topic would be to focus on good content and social network (which I m not doing much) to build natural buzz and link back.

  40. I think the old saying in real estate of “location location location” would work here. “Content Content Content” . Look at Mashable for example, it’s not only the content but the speed that the content gets posted and the length of the article. People don’t have time to read a biblical post, let people know at the beginning of the post with something like (Read Time 5-7 Minutes.) This let’s your readers know exactly how long it will take to read your post. Content will always be king, people will link if you have good stuff.

  41. Good up to date info. The day of paid link building are long gone (thank you Google)! Link building can be laborious if done properly as it takes a lot of time and consistency. Black hat techniques never work and too risky! I agree that good fresh valuable content on a quality site is the best place to work from – always give value to the visitor and folks will naturally to you – it’s slow but they quality links. Thanks for sharing your info.

  42. Hi!

Certainly producing a low quality content and looking to get more link back to your site is really useless to have and for me I believe producing quality content and working concisely for to get back links than you can have more links back to your site mainly because of people will like your content and start sharing them on their site.

  43. nice information to read about backlinks just doing Seo is not enough to get backlinks we must provides some quality content to our visitors and to get some good results for our websites.

  44. Good read about backlinks! I believe if you are contributing useful content, people will credit you for that and link back to your site (content). Low quality website will be buried on the SERPs. Thanks for the article!

  45. IMO, the best way to get backlinks is to create mind-blowingly-good content. Because when you do, people will automatically link to you and your content will be shared automatically – giving you valuable backlinks. After the Penguin update, it is vital to be careful with how you go about with your link-building strategy.

  46. Good tips, I hate the whole ‘bad neighborhood’ thing though, it surely means people can sabotage websites as they please?!

  47. Hey Richard,

I do not think that you should struggle for back links if you have a less competitive niche. if you have hard competitors then you can go for more back links but if you have long tail keywords and medium keywords then i would suggest you to write quality content on those pages and then just do good social media optimization and your keyword will be in good position after indexing.

Yes back links are important on those cases where you have competition with a lot of big websites. If you want to beat a keyword like : Travel agency
Then i will must say that you will require a lot of budget and a lot of methods to get back links !

    Thanks

    Supertintin

  48. You can make lot of back links with help of unique content, yes guest blogging is very useful to get quality back links. nice share.

  49. Maybe the problem in my blog is the poor neighborhood. Actually, I don’t put any exemption to my blogroll, even though I know that it might affect my blog, I can’t decline them, they are all part of my blogosphere. Thanks for this, I will consider the points you mentioned!

  50. thanks for sharing, I am wondering about how to get the backlink to my website. I never care about the poor neighbors. this tip make me more sense. anyway, your tip is helpful to me.

  51. Richard Adams,

Thanks for sharing these four ways to struggle to getting backlinks. In this way, a person should not increase his website’s backlinks on lower blogs. It decreases the officiality you know. And Google Search Engine also will not be prefer your backlinks from those lower ranked blogs.

  52. This was a very helpful read for me. I am so confused on this whole back linking thing. No matter who you ask, everyone has a different answer and will tell you that what the other person just told you is wrong. Everyone seems to be an expert on the matter to someone like me with limited knowledge on the matter. I am reading for at least an hour a day and most days leave the computer more confused then when I sat down. I am seeing lots of good information on this post and as well on this site.

    Thanks!

  53. Getting back links can be tedious but is a necessity. It is sometimes also difficult to avoid bad back links when people are copying and pasting your content to their spam site which frustrates me!

    Thanks for the informative post

  54. Hi Richard,
Thanks for the tips. I just wanted to ask for more details about the “links neighborhood”.
To be good, do the other links need to link to related websites or only to high PR websites?

  55. Am I wrong in thinking that the better your content, the more helpful and useful it is, the more people will link to your site by choice? I believe giving the best content around, creating the best guest posts and comment on related posts should be at the forefront of your mind. People love stuff that helps them, stuff that they need and they will share it and point to it. That is all free. Do you not agree?

    cheers
    Andi

  56. Great post I must say.

I had just wrote an article on how I get backlinks. The comments that I had received says that guest posting is the number one way people use to get backlinks.

You have mentioned something about content as well in this post. Great quality get shared by other bloggers in their posts and this is how we can build backlinks when we write great articles.

    Thanks for the tips

  57. With the updates of Google content and backlinks are becoming the crucial points in SEO. What I was found on a small research is people know how to make backlinks, but they are not working on it to make links.

    1. It’s too much of a nuissance. Most ppl prefer the blackhat backlinking method, and then, they cry about Pandas and Penguins…must i say that i am too lazy building them too? 🙂

  58. All points in the post are crystal clear. The best way of getting traffic is commenting. While commenting make sure that all comments are sensible as viewers are attract from them.

  59. Hey Richard,

I think a lot of people approach backlinks entirely the wrong way. They concentrate on the backlinks and not on the look and content of their site. Building backlinks is pretty useless if they are pointing traffic to a website that isn’t ready to receive it. The funny thing is, if you put most of your focus on building a quality site, then backlinks tend to come on their own and you don’t have to spend as much time chasing them down.

  60. I agree with you about the over-monetization concept… Too many new bloggers fill their websites up with AdSense banners before they start thinking about producing nice content.

  61. You’re right about the monetization. In the end i found i am earning more money once i took most ad networks down and just use Google anyway. So now my site looks better and I’m making more money. I think once my site grows bigger this might change though, but for now its the best way.

  62. Hello, Getting backlinks is not the only way to achieve better ranking, on my personal experience everyone should try to get those backlinks which can help website or blogs to achieve good PR juice and to get better ranking on search engine and for that every webmaster has to get Do-Follow backlinks juice because its every tough now to get a potential backlinks as wordpress itself is now providing no-follow links so you have to work hard to get better and best backlinks and for that you can also use social networking and social bookmarking websites. Thanks and very useful post from author.

I hope my comment will add some value to this post and will help others to find the better way of leads toward success in blogging. Thanks alot.

  63. This one is the complete guide for Backlink building Tips, no words for this, this info is simply great and can take any Blog/Website to high.

Yes I agree with the advice given in the article…..focus 100% on writing regular interesting posts and the backlinks will eventually follow. You need to work for around a year until you see significant results. Most bloggers give up or get bored along the way so if you stick at it then you have a real chance of success. Of course you need to do all the sensible SEO stuff as well…but keep the focus on regular high quality content in your chosen niche. Checkout meanygoatdotcom to see how I have tackled the same issues. Don’t worry about if you agree with the content or not…just look at how it is written and pesented. See if you can work out which keywords each post is optimized for…then Google the keyword and see where MeanyGoat is ranked…plently of number one slots for the longtail keywords…and each one of those brings more traffic.

  66. Thank you so much for share this information. I think I made a lot of mistake about backlinks in the past! Just sitting back and start again 🙂

  67. Does anyone outside of Google really know if a site can be banned by Google based on “bad” backlinks (blackhat SEO)?

  68. Thanks for the article.Good quality content is quite a trick. You can write a blog that you think is fantastic and no-one will read it.The time I have spent doing the reverse engineering of related websites has paid off.One thing I find is you have to go back to the basics.

  69. I am actively searching for information on how to get quality backlinks that will rank my website well in search engines. Thanks for the insight.

  70. Hi,
Good article. Slowly and steadily our backlinks are increasing. Key element is to have patience and consistently continue posting unique fresh content to help the readers.

  71. I believe guest posting and commenting on same niche blogs are best ways to get quality backlinks for free.
BTW thanks for the tips Richard 🙂

  72. I would like to know about link exchange. They are beneficial or not in ranking higher in search engine specially google

  73. Good article. But I’m getting impatient! My number of backlinks have stuck! I find that google is not crawling squidoo and ezine articles even though I have written many. I just don’t understand why they are not showing up as backlinks!

Will try out your tips though.

    Thanks.

  74. I agree with you that Blogs with poor content may need backlinks for increasing their ranking but its not in all cases. I have seen many blogs which have unique contents and also their words are 500+ but still they have either PR0 or PR1 and then the need for backlinks arises. I am also having PR2 on my blog whereas I think my blog deserves to have at least PR4.
I also agree with you that we must get quality backlinks not poor one as they are of no use.
Thanks for sharing your views and I have also tried to express myself on this topic. Thanks for giving such platform.

  75. thanks for this wonderful reminder. You hit me by “Amateur Design” idea. Im running a website with responsive theme, that is why this post reminds me of my task to fully furnish my design and posts to fit all screen of my visitors nicely.

  76. Thanks for sharing the tips ..agreed to you instead of going to look for several links only pick those links which are related to the domain and can excel your site for betterment ..Links in number will not produce any significant result only there type and quality will effect the site

  78. So am I right in summarising that your answer for the question ‘how do I get backlinks’ is to not worry about getting backlinks??
I guess it’s more of a “if you build it, they will come” approach!
