Facebook Fan Page Photos Tutorial [Video]

[shadowbox]Facebook Timeline for Pages was introduced in March 2012 which got rid of Fan Page photos as described in this post. [/shadowbox]

Your Facebook account has undergone numerous changes in the last few months including Fan Page photos and the way we display images on our profiles. The current layout allows you to have 5 images on the top of the page. On your profile, you can use a social media app like Profile Maker to upload an image and make gorgeous collages that resemble peek-a-boo image masks. There's no such luck for generating lovely Fan Pages with this technique, and I'm not sure why but it might be a decision made by Facebook based on “security issues”.  🙂

Quick Tip: If you have more than 25 likes on your Facebook Page, you can claim your branded url here.

Contrary to the behavior of photos on your profile, Facebook Fan Page photos rotate in unpredictably random sequences that leave little room for snazzy collages or any other artistically graphic design treatments. So there's no need to pull out your snazzy, hi-tech Canon DSLR to take a professional photographs just for to get the job done.

Ching Ya's Advice on Fan Page Photos

Whenever Facebook imposes new restrictions on users, my first instinct is to visit Ching Ya's blog for the complete run down along with all the tips and tricks. My last visit to her blog did not disappoint, and in a post titled How To Manage Photos on Top of Your New Profile and Facebook Pages she answered all of the questions I had about uploading Fan Page photos.

More Advice on using Fan Page Photos from “Get 10000 Fans”

I Stumbled Upon similar advice on a page called Get 10000 Fans although they made me jump through a few hoops first before I could get my hands on the “Fan Page Secret Guide” video.

Fan Page Photos Secrets?

They call it a secret, not me, but this is what you can do. Create thumbnails with what I like to call “mini-ads” on them to focus the attention of your fans on the products or services you're offering. Don't waste that valuable Fan Page real estate with pretty pictures – try uploading a few simple banner ads instead. In this video, I demonstrate how I used Google Docs and Awesome Screenshot to generate the perfect size image to upload on your Fan Page.

Make use of Fan Page photos to let your fans know that you're open for business, showcase your best selling products, create calls to action – do whatever you can within the size limit of 97 x 68 pixels. Take a look at how Get 10,000 Fans uses the Fan Page photos and tell me what you think about using them on your page. 10000 Fan Page photos

I attended a free training session from Get 10,000 fans but I haven't purchased anything from them, so it wouldn't be fair for me to endorse their products. However, I do like the creative use of the “mini-ads” displayed on their Fan Page photos in this example, it really grabs your attention.

    1. Hi Rakesh! Are we friends on Facebook yet? Let make sure we get connected over there too. Thanks for the comment, have a great day!

  1. Excellent tutorial and overview, this is something I will be implementing when back in town. Only thing I would suggest is not to really use a word processing program to create banners, and instead use a paint program like Paint.NET, Photoshop, GIMP….etc You can easily create your ‘page’ the dimensions and can put text on top of an image, outline the text to make it stand out….etc.

Using a resized version of your website logo is also important, and I have heard of people hiring others on Fiverr.com to take photo’s wearing your company T-Shirt or something as well.

One thing I tested recently was uploading a video to Facebook (instead of YouTube) for my fanpage, but it isn’t easy to display video (other than when it first posts to wall, you have to click on photo’s, then click ‘see videos’) it is hard to find for readers I think.

    1. Hey Justin. I agree there are many ways to create these Fan Page photos. I picked Google Doc because that’s the first one that came to mind. I like the way 10,000 fans used the images and outlined the text too.
When Facebook got rid of tabs they definitely made things harder to find. I can’t even find some of my own stuff on there now 🙁
      Thanks for the feedback.

  2. Solid and useful tutorial Ileane. I am not so big of a facebook user but when I see something that can help boost my online business, I don’t think twice. This is definitely something that I will be implementing on WordPress Junkies future pages. Just need the time to work on it 😉 Absolutely interesting, why pretty pictures when you can have pretty mini-ads 🙂

Well done Ileane, if you together with Ching, continue to provide top notch stuff like this, I might just create (maybe with you, lol), a FaceBook Junkies Network, haha

    1. DiTesco, come on and join us with being annoyed by all of the Facebook changes with the rest of us LOL!

Seriously, I’m starting to get more traffic from Facebook so there is a very positive spin. Count me in on the Facebook Junkies Network too (just kidding).

  3. You always have excellent tutorials Illeane. I just passed this one on to my web designer with the message “save this!” so we can get back to it when we are done with this affiliate program.

    Thank you!

    1. Thanks for saying that John and good luck with the affiliate program. Facebook has got to be a real winner for your Tanning and Smoothies business.

  4. Great and motivating post to improve fb fans…. I am really inspired by it and will implement the same to my fan page

  5. I love Ching’s blog and have found it very helpful when searching for things I need to know how to do on Facebook as well. Thanks for sharing this with us and I’m sure she appreciates it.

Love how you walked us through how to do those photos. Have run across a few people who have shared this with me but girl, they gave me screen shots and let’s face it, it’s just not the same. This was fabulous!!! Thank you SO much for that. I know my photos need some extra TLC right now so will have to work on that. You’ve just motivated me to get it in gear.

Thanks Ileane… You really shared some awesome stuff here girl.

    Adrienne

    1. Hey Adrienne,

It takes one good video blogger to know one right! Once I found out from Ching what size the thumbnail needed to be (not sure why Facebook is keeping us in the dark) my mind went to using Awesome Screenshot right from the start. I wanted to make creating the text as easy as possible and what could be easier than Google Docs? Of course you can make the fonts fancy and add a little more pizazz – but I like to keep my videos short and let folks use their imagination to fill in the blanks 🙂
      Thanks for stopping by Adrienne!

  6. Ileane,

I loved your tutorial. I have never used google chrome or awesome screen shot. That is great. Also great to find out about Ching’s blog.

Very informative and well done. Facebook is so hard to keep up with. They change things so fast sometimes that it is great to have tutorials on how to use it to our best advantage.

    Thank you

    Dee Ann

    1. Hi Dee Ann, welcome to Basic Blog Tips! I’m glad you’re finding the resources here helpful. Facebook is quite a challenge but once you get going with it you’ll start to reap the benefits quickly.

hey Ileane, great post on Facebook. thanks for sharing. I knew you could do the banners on top but was looking for the dimensions. You rock.

    1. Hi James! Ching Ya gets the credit for the thumbnail dimensions. Earlier today I visited a list of what someone referred to as 20 top Facebook page designs and NOT ONE of them got the image size right. 🙂 Looks like we got a jump on this one.
Let me know if you add some of these mini-ads to your Fan Page so I can come and have a look.

  9. Another awesome tutorial for my resource file! I’m not on FB currently, it is also something I plan to outsource, this will be passed along eventually. 😉

  10. Just when I feel like I’m just not going to bother with trying to figure out the new FanPage changes, you always come along with some cool tips to make me rethink my decision.
I might have to give this a try!

  11. Great tutorial Ileane! even me, the geekster meister learnt something 🙂

I love how your videos are always so friendly and easy going, well done you.

I just spent 2 days reinstalling windows so now I’m back on track and I would love to do a tech vid tutorial guest post here! have you or any of your readers got any requests?

    1. Yippee!!

I have tons of requests lined up! But this is the first one that comes to mind.

My daughter is dealing with this crappy web host with limited server space and all of that muck – so we can’t upgrade to the latest version of WordPress from the dashboard. Last time a cool guy helped me out and did the upgrade manually from FTP (Filezilla) but I would love to see learn how to do it myself. That way I don’t have to bug Devesh 🙂 How about that one??

      1. that is a great idea! I will work on that, I have oodles of web space and server stuff so I’ll set up a blog just for the tutorial! 🙂

  12. Delena Silverfox

Hi Ileane! I happen to love Get 10,000 Fans even though I haven’t been able to buy their awesome products.

The idea of small banner ads is another really good idea. I recently published my blog on Kindle, so I can at least put ads for that.

    Delena

    1. Hi Delena, I’m finding more valuable information from Get 10000 Fans since I wrote this post. I see that many of my friends have liked their Fan Page too. How are things going with adding your blog on Kindle?
      Thanks for coming by Delena.

  13. Owh man…. Thanks for the tips. You make the tutorial so easy to understand with the video. Hahahahaha…. Now i will be busy setting up my facebook page and stop stumbling in stumbleupon. 🙂

    1. Zezebel, let me know when you get your page up so I can Like it. After you get 25 fans you can change the URL to your page name. Keep me posted!

  14. Hi Mary,

First let me give you a hand with spelling my name correctly – it’s ILEANE. I just want to make sure you’re talking to the right person 🙂
I took a quick look at your Fan Page and to be honest at first glance it has me confused. I’m not sure what services you are offering. You can get some pointers from Mari Smith about how to add some key elements to your page and make it more lively. Check out her free webinar when you get a chance.

    Good luck!

  15. I like this website about basic blogging tips and it has given me some sort of commitment to have success for some reason, so keep up the good work. Thanks for this informative post about face book fans page.

    1. Hey Tony, another one like what? I’m not sure what you mean, but if you watch the Facebook video tutorial I recorded, that might help.

  16. Great tutorial, as always. I really love that peek-a-boo layout, I just don’t have the mug for it. LOL

I’ve seen this in action and some a really fantastic. I am doing a little custom job for my new FB fan page though.

    Thanks for the great advice!

  17. Very nice FB information. This is something that I’ve been putting off for quite a while and this post may have been just the inspiration I needed to finally jump in and start working on it. Thanks for the motivation!

    1. Brady, Facebook is something we tend to put off as long as possible because we know how time consuming it will be 🙂 At the same time we can’t avoid it so this is a good way to get started on with a Fan Page, add our branding using the “mini ads” and just ease into it one step at a time. 🙂

  18. Hi Ileane,
Very good tutorial and article too. It is a very good advice to resolve problems of fan photo page. And Ching ya advice is also very good and informative. It is very good article to make fan pages lively.

  19. Maintaining Facebook fan page is a great way to connect with other people especially if you’re a business. It’s also a great way to attract potential customers/clients too. So any updates or additional feature with regards to FB fan page is really an advantage to everybody.

    1. Hi Samantha, what do you think about using Facebook Comments plugin on your blog? Have you tried it yet? I’m thinking about getting it here at Basic Blog Tips, but I feel like I already have too many WordPress plugins.

  20. Not sure if my comment went through? PC went all crazy on me just then LOL

For what it is worth – fantastic post Ileane, and thanks so much for taking the time to share what awesome updates you get from your travels re: Facebook.

I agree that the photo collage adds a huge degree of professionalism to the page. Not sure if I would use the space to advertise if the other option was that awesome photo collage, but I do see how it is a smart move – especially for a site like ‘get 10k fans’

    Thanks for sharing Ileane

    1. Hey Alex, great to see that your comment finally got through! I appreciate your positive feedback on my latest Facebook post. Thanks!

    1. Shariff, Facebook and Google step on each other’s toes every now and then, but when you look at the big picture – you’re right Facebook is following in Google’s footsteps. HA!
      Thanks for saying that.

  25. Really without fans and regular daily users our blogs or sites are nothing. Nice advise to get 10000 facebook fans with useful link. Thanks Ileane!!!!!

  26. Super informative, Ileane! It’s good to know that there is more to Facebook than just updating my status or playing Farmville. Very nice of you to include a helpful video as well. Most users are not aware of the added features and options available to them in social networking sites such as Facebook. I totally agree with Sofia’s reaction to the link on getting 1000 Facebook fans. This post allows even the most ‘online challenged’ individual to maximized their Facebook experience.

  27. I am currently setting up my own fan page to showcase my talent as a photographer. I have followed some of your advices Ileane. I have also followed what Justin said to use only image processing programs like photoshop. Is it really good to upload a youtube video in your fan page?

    1. Hi Bran, feel free to come back and post a link to your Facebook Fan page so we can have a look. 🙂
You can add your YouTube videos by posting them as links. You can also upload the original file as long as it’s within the size limits for Facebook.
I use a service called Involver to add a YouTube tab to my Facebook Page. They have lots of great apps but you’re only allowed 2 free ones. So pick carefully 🙂

  28. Face book is actually is a great source of getting unique and worldwide visitors. Almost its all features are awesome and reliable. The new improvements in facebook fan page for photos is also very attractive and pretty look. Thanks for informative and effective post.

    1. You certainly don’t want to be left out of the Facebook mix if you have a business. That’s why I do share what little I know with my readers and point you in the direction of others who have more expertise like Ching Ya, Mari Smith and Amy Porterfield.

  37. I love Facebook Fan pages, and we should be aware of Facebook big changes from March of this year to iFrames, instead of static FBML pages. This changes are going to benefit more to online businesses.

  38. Thank you for that post. I’m always looking to increase the look of my FB page. This is certainly a great idea. Will subscribe to your blog

  39. Interesting and Informative post.

    1. Hi MegB, did you see any of the F8 conference the other day? I saw a few things but I’m not blown away like they said I would be.

  40. Great stuff.
And Ching Ya’s site is a great find as well.

I feel stupid because I personally didn’t even know there were programs/apps for making your normal facebook account look so cool. Here I was thinking these people put in so much time and effort into this.
When I’m somewhere where I can reach facebook I will definitely check this out.
    Thanks Ileane!

      1. Yes, facebook, twitter, youtube, piratebay, many upload/file servers. The port that you need to connect to Cpanel on Hostgator through an ip address, and many other things.
But there are ways to get around like a vpn. Just the decent ones cost money and the free ones you can’t really trust.

        1. (couldn’t directly reply to your message Ileane)
You said it well: I’m living here permanently for the time being.
Finally someone who doesn’t ask: Will you live there forever? haha.

I live in Beijing and just came back from Harbin this morning. A beautiful city. China has a lot to offer, definitely worth at least a visit 😉

  41. Awesome post!
Thanks for sharing the valuable information about the face book,I am regular user of the face book but never seen the option of manage the pics.

  42. Hi Ileane,

Another great, helpful post and one that i’ll have to bookmark for later. I have set up a Fan page but that was as part of my coaching on the Learn With sally course I’ve recently taken part in.

As I was working through the course I completed each module with the tools supplied but now I want to go back and create my own ones is association with my blog and the products I am currently working on.

I’ve seen the images that people have on their pages and some are very impressive, hence bookmarking this post 😉

    Thanks Ileane, take care, barry

  43. It’s good to know that there is more to Facebook than just updating my status or playing Farmville. Very nice of you to include a helpful video as well. Most users are not aware of the added features and options available to them in social networking sites such as Facebook.
