How I Use My BlackBerry To Write Draft Blog Posts

When it comes to blogging inspiration it can come to you in the strangest of places and the majority of the time a blog post will come to you when you are away from your computer.
WordPress Mobile Blogging

Now there are several things you can do when these inspirational posts pop into your head, jot them down in a note pad or even try to remember them when you get back to your computer, but for me I like to make the most of my BlackBerry and WordPress!

I can hear you asking how I do this, well it's really quite simple and it all boils down to the fact that you can do this on any smart-phone and WordPress.

WordPress Mobile Pack Plugin

Since my blog Blazing Minds has become quite popular over the last 12 months or so, I have noticed that there does seem to be a lot of hits coming from mobile phones, so this got me thinking about having my blog “mobile” ready, so I started using the WordPress plugin “WordPress Mobile Pack” not only does this configure the site to a simple readable format for mobile phones, it also has a mobile version of your WordPress admin pages.

WordPress Mobile Admin View

So having these mobile version of the Admin pages, really helps speed up the process of writing draft posts for my blog when I'm out and about and as my BlackBerry is with me everywhere I go, I can use this to jot down a possible post ready to tweak when I get home to my computer.

It's a simple case of accessing my WordPress Admin via my mobile browser, logging in and away I go, it's a very simple version of the WordPress Admin, no tags or categories, so this is ideal for a draft idea.

I actually did this with this post, but then decided to post it as a guest post here on Basic Blog Tips instead 😉

So take a tip from me, if you are using WordPress and do have a smart-phone, or even one that can browse the Internet and most can these days, install the WordPress Mobile Pack and then when you are out and about and you do get an idea you can get that idea straight to your blog as quick as a flash, then just finish it when you get back to your computer 😉

  1. BlackBerry is maybe the best device for blogging. Typing on an on-screen keyboard like on iPhone is very slow and I often have a lot of spelling mistakes.
Btw, the WordPress mobile pack is a great plugin.

    1. I’ve tried on the iPhone and as you say it was a bit slow and very fiddly, the BlackBerry is much better and faster 😉

    1. Let me know how you get on if you try it, the benefit is also that the plugin opens your blog up to those browsing on there mobile phones as well 😉

Hey Ileane, your contact form is showing an error 404 page not found, please email me ASAP at admin @ dennisedell.com 🙂

  3. I hate blackberry 😀 cause it’s still too expensive in our country, not that affordable yet. On the top of that the internet on mobile is also expensive. So for now, its my notebook, the only way out.

Anyway, Ileane, the plugins are attractive and appear really useful. Thanks for sharing your experience. Hope lots will be benefited.

  4. I’m not a BlackBerry (or smartphone) user so I can’t write draft posts from my phone. If I do become a smartphone user, writing draft posts from it will definitely come in handy.

I do have a mobile plugin installed on my blog. It’s called WPTouch that automatically transforms my blog into an iPhone-like application.

This is a great plugin..I been using it for awhile now..and it really helps on the readership..

    1. It sure does, I noticed that I’m getting loads of hits to my blog from mobile users, best to keep them keen with a blog that loads quickly and is simple to navigate around 😉

  6. I agree with you Karen, when it comes to blogging inspiration can come at any time and it normally comes when you’re not in front of your computer.

I have been seeing a lot of posts lately of people talking about using their smartphones to take care of blogging tasks but I wasn’t sure of how to go about doing this. So a big thank you for introducing me to the WordPress Mobile Pack plugin.

I just bought an iPhone last month and I’m very excited about installing this plugin and putting it to use. Thanks for sharing Karen, much appreciated.

  7. Honestly, this isn’t something I’ve thought too much about, probably because I don’t have a mobile phone that is smart enough to do anything beyond making calls and texting.

But I’ve also noticed that more people are looking at my blog on their phones, so I guess you’re right that it’s something worth looking into. Thanks for the advice, Karen!

  8. Thanks for the post! I just installed the mobile pack on both of my blogs. It was very easy to set up and looks great!

    Thanks so much,
    Keith

  9. Hi Ms. Karen,

Thanks for sharing, now i know that Blackberry is the most compatible in WordPress Mobile. I’ll give it a try.

  10. Karen!

I have not used a smart phone to write blog posts or do other things regarding my blog since I don’t have one. I have a cheap 15 dollars phone (O:

Anywho, great advice here. Now I know about the WordPress mobile pack – I have second thoughts on getting a smart phone.

    Thanks.

    1. Hey Adam, you may be able to use the WordPress Mobile Pack on your phone, if it can access the internet 😉

  11. I read about this plugin but have yet to try it. As for typing on the smart phone, aging has made it a difficult task for me.

Thanks for the tip Karen, will be installing the plugin tonight!

    1. As I mentioned earlier you may be losing traffic by not having your blog mobile compatible, you may notice a slight increase in visits via mobiles after you have installed 😉

  12. Hi Karen.
For my websites, I use mobilepress (. co.za) and never had a problem with it.
I never wrote a blog entry directly from a cell phone, but next month I plan to buy an iPhone.
Or do you think is more powerful BlackBerry?

    1. Hi Alex, it all comes down to personal choice between the iPhone and the Blackberry, I’ve had the luck to use both and while the iPhone is extremely popular, I did find typing lengthy stuff a bit of a chore, where as the BlackBerry, with it’s physical keyboard, is much easier and quicker to type on, so I opted for the BlackBerry 😉

  13. This is very useful, i actually own a BlackBerry and i already find it extremely easy to write from, but i never knew there’s a Mobile Pack Plugin, i’m curious how much it’ll improve on the experience.

    1. It will certainly give you an advantage of blogging away from your computer and it will make your blog load a heck of a lot quicker on mobile phones 😉

  14. I think that it’s probably best to remove any other mobile plugin before installing another 😉

  15. I have not thought yet to install such plugin but it looks quite intersting. Probably i will install him when i will buy a smarthphone to see if it is really helpful.

    1. My advice, as I mentioned earlier, is to install the plugin on your wordpress blog even if you are not blogging with your “smartphone” as it will help your blog when it is viewed from mobiles 😉

  16. That is new plugin with me but blogging on Blackberry is old. Though I have a old device (BB8700), I am always happy with the its capacity. Comment on smartphone is also my experience!

  17. Delena Silverfox

Uh oh, here is yet another reason why I’ve been drooling over the Blackberry. Between all the apps for smart phones nowadays, I’ve been looking at my LG and feel a little embarrassed. =) WordPress is chock full of some awesome plug-ins, but I had no idea about this onw.

    Thanks for the heads up!

    Delena

  18. Hi Karen, I also have a BB, but I don’t like to blog from a tiny screen. I guess I am so used to my bigger screen monitor, so it is really awkward to write long article or posts via mobile or iPad.. But that’s great if you can enjoy it, it is more practical 🙂 Thanks.

    1. It does take a bit of getting used to, but, this is an option to blog on the go and create a few lines of text in draft when an idea comes your way, you would then finish the post on your computer 😉

  19. It is good to have a mobile version for blog so readers can have a good experience to read our blog on their mobile devices. But, I still cannot familiar with writing a blog from mobile devices.

    1. Traffic is busy via the mobile sites these days, but having your post ideas in draft does help when you come to sit down in front of your computer 😉

  20. That’s a really useful plug in – it’s always much more enjoyable to write when out and about, than stuck in front of your computer.

    1. I get most of my inspiration when I’m out and about so having this as a option is perfect 😉

  21. I am an iPhone user. I know that it is very easy to have spelling mistakes on touch screen keyboard. I use it to draft important blog posts only, not for blogging 🙂

  22. That’s a lot easier than the way I use my blackberry. I simply keep a word doc on there and update it as inspiration strikes. Then, I go post when I have the chance. It’s working for me with my brief daily posts. I usually stay at least a month ahead on writing my posts.

  23. Hi,

I use WordPress application on my HTC Magic. It works very well. For those who are interested, they can download it in the Market for free. 🙂

  24. Our gadget now can help us do all tasks we want to do while we go online. Though the use of mobile phone can be a though way to update your blog, it’s still the most convenient way! You can access/update your blog anytime you want. This is important especially if you suddenly though a topic inside your mind.

    1. Hi Angela, thanks for stopping by and commenting, in this modern, fast paced, world I think being able to blog via our phones is important 😉

  25. you are making use of your Blackberry in a right way. When ever we buy a smartphone or business phone, we need to make the full use of it. What say? I prefer going for business phones when I’m in need. Some people for show off they buy business phone and they think they are admired by persons around them 🙂

    1. I’ve seen so many people with a good smartphone and only using it to make calls, what’s the point in that! It’s a smartphone for a reason 😉

  26. I’ve recently gotten into the smart phone era, but I didn’t get a black berry. I’ve found that I get hit for inspiration at really random moments, and usually put them on a notepad in my phone. Do you know if there is a WP application for HTCs?

    1. I dare say that if you do a search for “WordPress app on HTC” you’ll certainly find one, let me know how you get on 😉

  27. I use a BlackBerry Curve 3G and there’s a wordpress app available from BlackBerry Appworld that you can use to moderate comments, draft posts etc 😉

I love the WordPress App for BlackBerry 😉

    1. I’ve tried the WordPress plugin, but since they did the latest update of the app, it seened to keep having problems, so I’ve steered clear of it 😉

  28. I love blogging from my phone. It’s just so convenient. No longer do I have to feel like I’m wasting time when I’m stuck somewhere without a computer. I find myself working on blog posts a lot of times when I arrive somewhere before the person I’m meeting. I just sit in my car and get to work on my phone. It’s great.

    1. Hi Brady, it’s certainly help when you have that brief spark of an idea for a new blog post, thanks for commenting 😉

  29. I have a half-QWERTY Keyboard in my BlackBerry. Whenever I am free from work, I write some sort of articles on my phone and publish it later in the night. I really enjoy typing using half Qwerty keys.

    1. Do you find that you can get more inspiration by using your phone when a thought of a new blog post comes to mind and you can get it down straight away?

  30. Hi there! This was very good information, but unfortunately I don’t use Word Press for my blog. Do you have any tips/pointers for Blogger?

Thanks in advance and I really like your blog. 🙂

    1. Sadly, I don’t no, but I dare say that if you do a search across Google, you may find something that will help 😉

  31. Thank you for sharing this, Karen!I don’t have a Mobile theme or plugin for my blog yet. I noticed an increase in traffic from mobile browsers to my blog in the past few weeks. I might give Mobile Pack Plugin a try.

    1. The mobile pack is certainly worth using, not only will it speed up the loading time on a mobile device, but it will also reduce the amount of bandwidth used when calling the page on the mobile 😉

  32. Wow, finally someone as obsessed over there blackberry as me! Lol. I havent done very much blogging from my BlackBerry (Storm 2), but I have toyed a small amount with the the wordpress mobile pack plugin and I liked it alot, primarily because of its user friendliness and ease of use.

    What BlackBerry are you using?

  33. The beauty of these blogging engines and CMS platforms is the lack of limitations and ease of manipulation that allows developers to implement rich content and ‘skin’ the site in such a way that with very little effort one would never notice what it is making the site tick all without limiting content and effectiveness

  34. After study a few of the blog posts now, and I truly like your way of blogging. I use both my computer and my BlackBerry for my blogging, if I’m out and about it’s my BlackBerry that’s my blogging platform, mainly for writing the post down in draft on the WordPress App, which is then sent as draft for me to tweak when I get back to my computer.

  35. Have I been looking forward to commenting on this article? Hell yes! Blackberry is my most favorite device in today’s rapid world. Apart from just blackberry messenger and other features, I actually use it to maintain my blog website. It simply rocks!

  36. unfortunately I am not a blackberry user, but this information adds to my knowledge, who knows one day I would use a blackberry 🙂
