Five Ways Twimbow Helps You Improve Your Twitter Experience

The idea of Twimbow arrived after having realized all the precious time I was wasting on Twitter due to the lack of tools that could really help me getting the most out of this great social media platform.

Most Twitter users would definitely agree on this point: Twitter is a wonderful service, many users are addicted to it and use it everyday, but sometimes it is very difficult to keep track on what's going on and stay in touch with your favorite “tweeps”. Let's face it, time is limited and it is crucial for everyone to use tools that let you optimize the amount of time spent on Twitter and social media. Moreover, as a “consumption” platform, you would love to read as much content as you want without loosing focus and organize it, eventually, for future reference.

This is where Twimbow comes into help (the original idea came from my personal need to save time when using social media). Twimbow is a web based social media hub, very different from any other similar service around, that helps you organize your online conversations and keep track of what is really important for you. It helps you avoid “noise”, saving time and getting the most out of your Twitter friends.

Here are five ways Twimbow can help you organize your Twitter Experience.

1) Color Labels

On Twimbow, you can assign Gmail-like color labels to users. Unlike Twitter lists (that you can use on Twimbow, as well), color labels lets you quickly identify a user or a group of users among the others and quickly filter them in / out in your timeline.

By default, there are three labels: family, friends, coworkers.

If you want to create a new label, click on the rainbow-colored icon on the top-left corner of the central column (home buzz) and click on “new label”. Then you can choose the name and the color.

Alternatively, click on the grey vertical icon on the left of a tweet sent by a contact you want to assign a label to and a. choose the color label b. click on “Add / Modify Labels”.

If you want to quickly check which users belong to a certain label, just click again on the labels icon on the top-left corner of the home buzz and click on the body-shaped icon on the label. The users belonging to that label will be shown.

Last but not least, you can check / uncheck colors in the central column to show/hide those users. Bonus tip: Want to mute certain users? Assign a color to them and uncheck it 😉

2) Twimbow Monitor

Unlike other similar services, Twimbow doesn't let you create more than three columns. Everything else you want to keep track of (keywords, users, tags, lists) go to the Monitor. The Monitor is the area at the bottom of the main user interface. Open it by clicking on the “Up” arrow on the left and start adding stuff. What can you add? You can add any word, tag, combination of words, advanced search phrases, lists.

Examples you can try on the Twimbow Monitor:

  • red –> you get realtime notifications for any mention of “red”
  • red OR blue –> you get realtime notifications for any mention of “red” or “blue”, in the same monitor
  • red AND blue –> you get realtime notifications for any mention of “red” and “blue”, in the same tweet
  • @[user] –> you get realtime notifications for any tweet sent by @[user]
  • @[user/listname] -> you can keep an eye on the list called “listname” created by @[user]
  • #tagname -> you get realtime notifications for any mention of “red”

There are many other ways to use the monitor, I suggest to experiment a bit. For any “monitor”, you can activate desktop notifications on Google Chrome, but in any case, when the monitor panel is closed, you will be notified by new occurrences of the stuff you are monitoring at the bottom.

3) Schedule Tweets

If you don't want to flood your followers with lots of tweets all together, you can just schedule your tweets in advance. Twimbow provides you with 24 slots (one per hour) where you can put your tweets in order to be sent later. Just click on the Twimbow Slots icon (third on the top left) and start filling the slots!

4) Focus on news

Twitter is a great way to come across interesting news, but the problem is that you should jump to other tabs to read them. On Twimbow, you can use the “Reader”. It lets you click on an link and read it from within Twimbow, in a “magazine-like” format.

5) Filter everything!

Twimbow provides users with a very powerful filter engine that lets you filter out everything you don't like from your timeline. This is a great way to avoid stuff you don't like (example: Foursquare checkins, Paper.li “daily summaries”, tweets about certain subjects and so on). Just open the settings pane and add any filter you want. In the example below, I added “became the mayor of”, “checked in”, “4sq.com” to filter every tweet related to Foursquare checkins.

  6. Great review, Luca. I reviewed Twimbow about a year (possibly more) ago and it’s wonderful to see how the feature set has been expanded. I particularly like the use of colored labels and the scheduling capability.

Sharon, I remember it very well, you reviewed it when we were still in alpha I think. Lots of new features and way more features will be added in the following weeks… stay tuned! 😉

  7. Seems very nice tool, I really like it’s magazine style reader feature where you can read anything without opening the links on new tabs.

Riya, add as many keywords, tags, users or lists to the monitor. Way better. Not having more columns has been a design / usability choice.

  9. I agree completely with previous commentators, this tool is really amazing! Most of all I like the fourth one! Because it was always a problem for me to read anything on it. And now I know that I can do it with the help of “Reader” in a magazine format. Thanks a lot for sharing this interesting information

  10. I was looking at Twimbow a while ago and it really adds a colorful experience to following users on Twitter, though to get the tagging and labeling right it takes some initial investment in adding labels to users, it really has some appeal and helps you notice the things you want to notice more easily.

  11. The tool will really give a hand while working in Twitter and what I like about her most is the function of filtering the stuff which I like a lot in order to have everything in some kind of system.

  19. It was only today that I happen to read about Twimbow in another blog. I was looking at making my twitter account more useful. Will give it a try.

    1. Luca Filigheddu

wonderful, looking forward to your feedback! Just drop me a tweet.

Yes, just assign a new color label (you can call it “Mute”) to that user and un-check that label on the home buzz. From then on, just assign that label to all the users you want to “mute”.

  20. There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game.

  21. Before I was just having a hard time to use Twitter and the way I waste time, but since this app came along, it made using Twitter much much easier.

  22. I have tried Twimbow but never think that it can be used to this extent, now I’m ready to switch back to twimbow

  23. I like 5th one Filter everything which i was looking for months, now i found it and definitely make use of it as there are so many annoying twitter users and sometimes i missed quality tweets in between them!. plus one for this feature!

  24. I really liked Twimbow , Nice and colourful website ! I have registered at Twimbow attached my Twitter account with it.

Here I want to congratulate you for launching such a colorful and interesting website !

  25. I had no idea that this even existed, never heard of this before, and since I have a hard time understanding how most things work, this was very helpful. I am now using it and love it!

  26. this does look a little confusing for now. I have to come back and reread his post. Hopefully, I’ll be able to understand after reading it a few more times. Some things I just don’t grip at first. It’s not you: it’s me 🙂
