With thousands of WordPress plugins to choose from, finding the best ones is not easy.  We all want a blog that’s optimized for the search engines, our visitors, and ultimately our business.  Based on these three objectives, here are 10 of my favorite WordPress plugins you can use right away to make your blogs function a lot better!

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Plugins

Creating a blog that is optimized for search engines can increase your number of targeted, high quality visitors.  Here are 6 great WordPress plugins to help you improve your on-page SEO.

1. All-In-One SEO Pack WordPress Plugins

This is one of the most well-known SEO plugins that’s been around.  It automatically optimizes your WordPress blog for the search engines.  Because of its effectiveness, it’s considered a must have plugin and continues to be one of the best free SEO plugins.

In case you have not used it yet, this plugin allows you to add the best meta data, tags, and descriptions about your blog.  It helps the search engines understand what your blog is about and then categorize your site with better accuracy.

WordPress PluginsIn the main settings of this plugin, you can decide on what keywords, titles, and descriptions to be used for your website.  Within each post, you can add more keywords for that specific post.  This is extremely important for the search engines in order for it to place your posts on the top results and drive targeted traffic to your site.

2. Google XML Sitemaps

This is another popular and must-have WordPress Plugin due to its powerful function.  With the sitemap it creates, you can place it anywhere you want to accommodate your site’s layout.  What this plugin does is it helps the search engine spiders to crawl your site to get an accurate layout of its structure.  In addition, it allows the search engines to track your site whenever a new post, page or other contents are added.

3. Scribe SEO

Scribe SEO is a new plugin created by Copyblogger, one of the most influential websites for many bloggers and online marketers.  This is an effective SEO plugin when it comes to SEO for both posts and pages.

This plugin goes through your post and evaluates it based on its keywords, text layout and other relevant factors to give your a score along with tips to optimized it for the search engines.

4. SEO Pressor

SEO Pressor is one of the top picks for 2011.  Similar to Scribe SEO, it provides each post with a score.  It also tracks your H1, H2 and H3 counts and the number of internal links.  It makes your posts more appealing for the search engines and helps improve your rankingsWP Starter Guide

5. SEO Smart Links

This is a simple plugin that saves you a lot of time. It makes internal links automatically within your posts based on your keywords.  This impresses the search engines and helps improve your traffic as well.

6. SEO Friendly Images

Having images in your posts is a plus for SEO and your visitors.  This simple plugin adds an alternate text (alt) and title description to your images for the search engines, making it easier for the spiders to crawl your content.

WordPress Plugins To Encourage Readers Interaction

If you have quality content that gets you traffic and comments, that’s great.  But you may also need some plugins that provide additional functions that help your visitors feel more encouraged and excited about commenting on your blog, right?  Here are 2 WordPress plugins that help you do the work.

7. CommentLuv

CommentLuv is a widely used plugin considered a must have by many bloggers.  This plugin encourages comments, allowing the commenters latest post to be linked back to their blogs.  This is a win-win situation where you get more traffic to your blog, interact with your visitors, and they get the rewards for commenting.

8. WordPress Threaded Comments

As what its name suggests, this plugin allows your readers to interact with each other and the discussion will be displayed threaded.  It also allows you to interact directly with your readers in an organized manner.  You need this plugin if your existing theme doesn’t have this function built in.

Business Boosting Plugins

When you have impressed the search engines and your visitors, you want some WordPress plugins that help boost your business.

9. Popup Domination

Many bloggers think popups are frowned on.  But many high earning bloggers find this plugin extremely effective.  According to Yaro Starak of Entrepreneurs-Journey, this plugin has helped increase his opt-in rate by 150%.  It’s also known for increasing the subscription rate by up to 400%.  It comes with various attractive templates and guides to help you build your list.

Your visitors are greeted with a user-friendly box where you can promote your product or free offer to your potential subscribers.  Within the box you can list the benefits of your product or free offer to new visitors to your blog.

10. Widget Context

This is one of my favorite free WordPress plugins that’s very handy if you want to dictate which pages or posts show which sidebar widgets.

With this plugin you can tailor which widgets to show based on the word counts, categories, tags, etc. of a post.  This is perfect if you have a specific ad, product offering, or list signup that you want to present to a targeted prospects. So the outcome is an increased conversion and more cohesive content.

That’s it, 10 of my favorite WordPress plugins.  This is by no means an exhaustive list, it helps to get you started and you can add some more WordPress plugins to your list as you go to further improve your blog to raise its search rankings, drive more targeted traffic, and increase your conversions.

Great plugins indeed Janus. I have used them all with the exception of Widget Context, where I preferred to use Dynamic Widgets instead. They are basically the same, although I think that Dynamic Widgets has better settings and is also free. Coincidentally I have also written a post about SEO plugins and I am convinced that with your recommended plugins in addition to perhaps some that I also recommend are more than enough for users to improve their WordPress on-page SEO.. Awesome stuff!

Good list. I just wanna add one more important plugin: Backup. If something goes wrong (and it often does), its good to have a backup plan. Backup Buddy seems to be a good choice but its not cheap. A cheaper solution (havent found one free and good backup plugin so far) is backupcreator.

Thanks. One more hint for the beginner webmasters – always check the changelog before installing a plugin. Try to use actively developed plugins instead of more feature-rich but rarely updated plugs to avoid headache while updating/upgrading your wordpress installation.

You may also check out other old and actively developed wordpress plugins in addition to the list above: (link removed by Ileane – please use the CommentLuv field to add your links. If you want to link to sales pages, get CommentLuv Premium)

I love Wordpress for the plugins, but I’m always concerned about adding them, because I worry about how they’ll impact the speed of my blogs. Can we have 10, 20 – what’s the magic number that won’t make my site crawl? I’m certain that it all just depends, but it does make me pause before downloading :)

Thanks for this great list. I’ll be referencing it in the future.

Hi Kimberly,

Good question, I’ve searched the WordPress support forum and found the following reply to a similar question (too many plugins = slow wordpress?):

“It’s possible, but more than likely there’s one plugin that’s causing the bulk of the slowness. Try decativating all plugins. If that improves the load time, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.”

Hi Janus,

Threaded comment and widget context are something that I am after. My theme currently is clashing with the nested comment function in Wordpress so hopefully threaded comment will help. Also, I assume widget context will allow you to display specified ads on specified pages / posts, unlike the typical sidebar widget, which shows the image on every single page?

For All in One SEO, I have already replaced it with Wordpress SEO due to the hosting staff complaint about the plugin, which drains a lot of resources and causing some problems for the server…

Thanks for your comment. Yes, widget context allows you to specify widget visibility settings so you can display specified ads on specified pages and posts.

It seems that WordPress SEO by Yoast has its advantage over All-In_one SEO and quite a few people are using it instead.

Hi Ng (and Ileane),
Great list thanks for sharing. I found one or 2 that I didn’t know about. As somebody mentioned, a good backup plugin should be added. I’m sure people know about VaultPress. I also found one that would backup to DropBox.
What about Akismet for spam — or is this one too obvious. I would also add a good Caching plugin like WP Cache,
HOWEVER,
be very careful because obviously the more you add the slower you site becomes.

Hopefully I’ll see some of you at WordCamp in Atlanta: http://clickho.st/WPc2012

Cheers,

Nice list, I use most of them except All in one SEO. I use Wordpress SEO by Yoast, its a great SEO plugin and does some more stuff like RSS feed header and footer, XML sitemap. So it actually replace few plugins from the list.

I use most of the plugins above. These plugins do help us to organize our blog, help us get a better ranking in serps and get more traffic/subscribers.

Popup domination is a great software to use. But, I prefer WPsubscribers because they offer a lot more features for the price of $47 (The new version of Popup domination – 3.0 costs about $87 – that’s with reduction). So I think WPsubscribers is a better option :D

I use some of the plug-ins above, but not all – you’ve listed a few here that I need to check out! Thanks – always good to have trusted recommendations before delving in. I recently had one innocuous plug-in go all rogue on me and shut down my site for a bit until the host determined which one it was, and blew it away!

Hey, Ms. Ileane, the post below is from a friend of mine who would very much appreciate it if you’d go let him know what you think of it. :) (Yep, part of my New Year’s Resolutions is to support others in reaching their goals, and to focus on others for a bit after that 10 week festival of self-centeredness that left me with a new frog–er, blog–to feed! ;) That was fun – I still grin thinking about that interview with you. This is a useful list, but I must drop in my two cents and say that I much prefer WordPress SEO to AIOSEOP. It’s so much more advanced and well written. AIOSEOP does the basics well, but it doesn’t go much further than the basics. WordPress SEO for instance also handles XML Sitemaps, so that’s point 1 and 2 in your list combined already.

when it comes to [downloading and installing WordPress on your dedicated server], and having an assortment of WordPress plug-ins available to you free of charge, you just have to be thankful for free open-source CMS software that’s still available on the World Wide Web. The good thing about having WordPress plug-ins and WP-blogs available to download for free is that those who are unemployed, or making a career change, can start up their self hosted blog at no cost [only for the exception of paying for their domain name and web server]. I’m glad the internet is around, as well as wonderful opportunities to make the best of it, by way of self-publishing with WordPress, and wonderful plug-ins to enhance your WordPress blogging functionality :-)
