New YouTube Design

Preview the New YouTube Design Now! [Video]

Google has been experimenting with a new YouTube design for channels. This new YouTube design is based on the feedback they received from the users, partners and channels owners as a result of the Cosmic Panda experiment. According to Google, the goal of this redesign is an effort to help users:

  1. Customize Your Channel
  2. Engage Your Audience
  3. Expand Your Presence

I got the update on my YouTube account the other day and I recorded this impromptu video, without knowing what to expect. I discovered some really awesome features that I'd like to share with you now.

More profile links on the New YouTube Design

One of the first things I noticed after I recorded the video is that you can add additional links to your profile. I added links to my favorite social networks like Twitter and Facebook and I also added links to both of my blogs. That's the good news. The bad news is that those profile links are no longer DoFollow, they are NoFollow.

I'm really pleased with the new layout and overall it find it much more eye appealing and I do think it will help increase engagement and make it easier to get more YouTube views. The only options I can't seem to find is how to subscribe to a YouTube Channel by email. I sent feedback to YouTube about this when they introduced Cosmic Panda, but it seems they still haven't found a place to add the option. I hope they have not decided to get rid of subscribing by email, but I hope they find how to design YouTube channel options that don't interfere with the user experience.

Here are some other key features that I noticed:

  • Choose from 3 tabs as the default landing page for your YouTube channel – Featured, Feed or Videos
  • On the Featured Tab you can pick from 4 different layouts Creator, Blogger, Network or Everything
  • Other users who have not Opted in for the new YouTube design will continue to see your old design

You don't have to wait for a notice to appear when you log into your YouTube account. Click the image below and you will be taken directly to the Opt In Screen.

I'm pleased with how Google is keeping up with the times and putting a fresh face on YouTube. What do you think of the new YouTube design – will you give it a try?

  8. Thanks for the introductory video Ileane. I am frustrated as for some reason I still do not have the “new look” available for me. I Guess Google is rolling this feature out slowly.. Hopefully I soon will be able to take a closer look at it. Your video did give me a good “taste” of what to expect. Thanks!

  9. I rather like the new design features, though any changes to popular sites usually go down badly with users – look at all the complainers whenever Facebook makes changes!

  10. I was trying out the Youtube Cosmic Panda in beta; made my channel really cool looking and then it all reverted back to normal by the next time I logged in. It happened twice and I got tired of it, hehe.
Will try again now, and hope it stays!

  11. It seems like Google is changing EVERYTHING around Youtube, Gmail, Analytics Adwords…all their interfaces are changing! AHHHH lol

I like the Youtube update though being able to edit videos directly from the video page is great and saves times.

  14. Hi Ileane,

I usually don’t log-in to youtube account to watch any video, I do it when I want to save any interesting video and I think it’s almost a month when I last logged in there. Going to check it now and I’m sure new design would be more catchy and improved like Gmail.

  15. This is a cool design. I love the pace at which Google is making changes to all of its product so as to make it match with the current standard users are looking for. Thanks Ileane for this news and update

  20. Thanks for the article on the recent changes regarding Google. It seems that Google is going social just like Facebook. With YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and other social networking websites, no wonder for Goggle Plus.

  21. Hi Ileane
I have just made the switch after watching your video. I am not sure I live the new version better. I think that I miss some interaction with my friends and subscribers. Maybe it is possible to customize, but I have not been able to find it yet. In general I would like to be able to customize more of the views just the way I like it to be. I hope that will be possible sometime in the future.
Thank you for the video tour Ileane.

    1. Hi Thomas, thanks for your feedback. I don’t interact as much on YouTube as I would like too. Engagement is always good.

  22. I love the new YouTube design actually, I noticed it when I started uploading a video to Youtube, it caught me “off-guard” at first, but overall it’s a good design.

  24. I went to check out my Youtube channel when I saw your post and it is a bit messed up from this upgrade..I will have to go and fix it a bit…

Thats a shame about the profile links being nofollow.. Lucily I am a Youtube partner and get a whole dofollow section… 🙂

    1. Hey Mitz, I applied for the YouTube partner program, but I don’t have enough traffic over there yet. I’m going to keep following your tips and maybe I’ll get there one day 🙂 Thanks Mitz!

  25. Interesting, thanks for the info. I don’t put enough effort into youtube I should really start doing so, maybe the new look will inspire me.

Hello. I wanted to give you a note to verbalize my thankfulness. I have been watching your blog posts for a month and have got a ton of excellent tips and appreciated the way you have built your web site. I’m going to make my blog however I feel it is too general and I need to concentrate more on particular issues.

  31. I heard a lot of people don’t like this new layout, but I don’t know why they don’t like it because I really love it. I think this is way better then it was before. Thanks for sharing this review!

  32. Thanks for your revision. I love YouTube where it can making video while blogging and blogging while making videos to promote blog new content.

I am using the old design of YouTube and basic where the audiences could be able to looking for their video a lot easier on the Playlist.

  33. I guess Google is trying to keep their products updated. Youtube’s search tab is actually the 2nd most searched tab after the Google search bar. People stumbling on your video or your Youtube can highly mean traffic for your blog.

  34. Hi,

I found the new design much cool, but the previous design allowed me to add my website link in it. But the new design doesn’t allows. Anyways amazinglyy written post.

    Cheers.

  35. Youtube has finally taken a stand to the modern side! 🙂

It does add some nice eye-appealing stuff to the new design.

Everything is so much more organized and I can find everything much more easier 🙂

  36. Glad to know that YouTube’s new design changes gives a lot of new options for content creators who run their own channels. Love the new design, very cool!

  37. I really prefer the old youtube layout to tell you the truth… But you’ve got to get used to it like always I guess!

  38. The new YouTube design is really just eye appealing, still great for Ads but for me , nothings changed. It is just like the Facebook new timeline which is very confusing.

  39. Well I think they trying to hard sometimes and they simple overdeliver . I see it as that new Facebook timeline format which I have mixed feelings about. It’s kinda messy but there is something cool about it when its done right. For me it’s ok but for many people new youtube may be confusing.

  40. I think that is quite a great improvement from the previous layout, the features are an added bonus too. I must admit though that it took me some time to navigate and explore the new features when it was first launched. Thanks Ileane!

  41. Hi Ileane! I think that Youtube has definitely altered our way of sharing and it is simply phenomenal! The features you mentioned here are are all practical and user-friendly too! Thanks!

  42. Hey Ileane! Although it’s been quite awhile since the new design and features were launched, I must say that everything about this change is remarkable. I specifically appreciate the fact that we can now add more profile links. Thanks for the in-depth look!
