I blogged for 2 years before I got the nerve to say anything remotely controversial. I'm very opinionated and I almost imploded holding things in. And, like you said, there's the backlash that comes along with speaking your mind. I What gave me courage were the people who urged me to speak. Knowing that comments can be moderated helped a great deal, too. If you are going to speak on an unpopular topic, just be convinced about where you stand. You can't waver.
