How to Build the Best Search Rankings and Content for Your Blog

Every day I receive emails from people who are just starting with their first blogs. Many people will ask how to make money with their blog or how to achieve top search rankings. My response is always the same… I tell them that blogging is one of the slowest forms of generating money online, but it can also be one of the most rewarding and lowest cost investments as well. Instead of a physical dollar amount, you need to invest your time and dedication to finding a quality niche and creating really great content.

It takes a lot of time for a blog to go from nothing to an authority site that ranks very well in the search engines. There may be some short cuts or creative ways to get ahead at a faster rate, but in the end it comes down to QUALITY links and QUALITY content. I'm also a big believer in guest posting. Not only is it free and gives you exposure on other blogs to new traffic sources, but it also brings traffic back to your site and it creates long term and high quality backlinks as well.

My Advice About Getting Good Search Rankings

In the end… if you want to make it in the game of online marketing and building a blog into something big, focus on your content and link building methods and not trying to game the system.

  1. Great post Zac, i was looking for this tool , i googled a lot but couldn’t find any good legit serp checker.

google just released panda 3.8 on 25june and people would be busy checking their serps , so right post at the right time!

    1. Excellent, glad you found these useful. It’s always a pain to weed through search results when so many of them are garbage.

  2. Hi Zac,
Thanks for this post. For me it’s timely since i just started a new blog and i’m in the process of building links and promoting it. These resources will come in handy.
I always look forward to posts done by you as it seems you always know what I’m planning to embark on.
    Again Thanks!

  3. Love the “what page of search are you on” – first time I’ve seen this one and I’ve used quite a few different methods over the years. Fascinating. Thank you!

  4. Hello Zac,

It’s good to see your post here. I hope I can get on on mine someday. hehe..

    I loved these tools.

I tried the keyword phrase “Blogger to WordPress Migration” for my blog oddblogger.com and my post came on 4th number. Good? bad? I wrote it 3 months ago.

I am going for a trial for the second one. And I don’t use Firefox. I hope there is a Google Chrome substitute for that plugin.

What would you say about Google Chrome incognito mode? When we open a tab in incognito mode, then we are completely NEW to Google (if I am right). No cookies, history etc are stored.

Do you think, one can check if he or she appears in Google SEPRs by doing a Google search in incognito mode of Google Chrome? I have tried that many times.

  5. Searchstatus comes in quite handy with Firefox. The other two tools are quite new to me. Thanks Zac!

I am currently using Traffic Travis to check my blogs search rankings. 25. Hey Zac,

Great post and great tools you shared. I knew about a couple of them but not the very first one. I guess it doesn’t go any further then ten pages. I like to see my progress from where I start and how soon I get to where I want to be.

Appreciate you sharing these with us, great resources.

    ~Adrienne

  26. My brother has been a big proponent for a long time of going more for direct traffic and letting the rankings take care of themselves. In the wake of Penguin, I have to say that I’ve been feeling the same way. That way, you’re not totally gaming the system.

I still keep an eye on my rankings, but I have been striving more to make connections with people and building relationships. I feel in the long run, that will get me where I want to go.

    Thanks for the post!

  27. Zac, excellent post. I haven’t heard of any of these and some I started putting to use as I read this. I love the first one with the weird name and it is very fast. What I like most about it and is that really showed me where I rank, and what my keywords is and isn’t doing for my blog. It also helps me get back to basics on what I need to revise and revamp as I change my blog template yet again. Thank you!

  28. Hi Zac,

Thank you for sharing these tools with us. I haven’t heard of any of them and they all sound very useful. I can’t wait to give them a try!

    Thanks again!
    Stacy

  29. I just began a new site and am always worried about SEO ! Thanks a lot for the tips to check my sites performance…

  30. Thanks for spotlighting these tool. It’s easy enough to know what you’re not ranking for, but finding what you are ranking for can be a bit trickier – at least for me.

  31. Thanks for this great list of tools, Zac. I like the idea of being able to track my progress on certain search terms.

This will definitely give you a measure on how you’re doing with your blogging strategy.

    Great stuff!

  32. Good stuff! I hadn’t heard of some of those so I’ll give them a shot. It’s unusual for a good tool to be free so I’m happy to experiment! I also use the SEOMOZ bar in firefox. It’s less about rankings and more about PR and other stats but you can use it to compare your site to others in search results, which is kind of cool. Thanks for the tips!

    1. I also use Seomoz and I love it. I can easily search who is having better ranking than me with a due keyword and mimetize the results within the SEOMoz webpage.

Yet, your solutions seem pretty cool, but they are not automated

  33. This is indeed a great read and I am glad to read it. Search rankings have in fact bothered many of us and most of us must have felt helpless regarding what steps they should take to get the to ranks. After reading this post I am sure that many have been benefited with the tools you mentioned and will be beneficial for many to achieve their desired goals.

  37. Thank you Zac there are some great resources there that I had not heard of. I have been trying to find ways to track my keywords. Thanks for the share.

  38. Hi Zac,

These are all excellent ranking checkers. I would also suggest Raven Tools since it (like many others) is also bundled with a variety of search engine optimisation features (the difference -some are actually vauable 😉 )

Also, as suggestion to every blogger, I would not look at rankings on a daily basis (you will go insane), but rather look at it weekly, write quality content and use the other SEO tips Zac referenced in the post.

  39. Nice work Zac. I personally use AWR (Advanced Web Rankings) to check where I’m ranking. It’s a paid tool, but it’s only $99, so not that bad. I had heard a lot of great things about Sheer, and your post has inspired me to check it out.

One thing you may want to consider adding to the content of this article, is that if bloggers just do 2-3 minutes of keyword research prior to publishing (even for only their title tag!), they can see significant positive impact to their rankings.

  40. This is a great post, I wasn’t really concerned about tools that we can use to monitor blog’s ranking, but the last part was great, really help me understand how blog is actually going to help me generate revenue.

  41. These are really useful websites for any webadministrator. Normally I would look at my ranking on the Google toolbar until I found out that the results posted there are at most 3 months old! Now with these sites the only thing I should be doing is to look for keywords that would help me alleviate my site
